The “Abber” Club, affiliated with the Department of Communication Disorders at the College of Life Sciences, Kuwait University, organized a special event in celebration of International Stuttering Awareness Day. The event drew wide participation from students and enthusiasts, achieving remarkable success on multiple levels.
This year, the club aimed to go beyond basic awareness by presenting deeper educational content designed to enhance understanding of stuttering and the field of speech and language therapy, while also highlighting the services provided by professionals in this area.
The event opened with several interactive stations that covered topics such as the nature of stuttering, its types, methods of assessment, and appropriate treatments for each case. This was followed by an awareness lecture delivered by Dr. Mohammed Al-Ameer, who discussed the meaning and causes of stuttering, correcting common misconceptions—such as the belief that stuttering stems from psychological reasons or imitation of another person who stutters. He also explained the scientific reasons behind why stuttering often disappears during singing or recitation of the Qur’an, pointing to the role of the right hemisphere of the brain in such cases.
Speech and language specialist Zahra Ghazanfari also participated in the lecture, where she discussed clinical treatment approaches and emphasized the importance of parental awareness in dealing with individuals who stutter, noting that family support and encouragement play a crucial role in the success of therapy.
The club also hosted Engineer Fatima Al-Moussawi, one of the founders of the “I Speak” Stuttering Club, who shared her inspiring personal journey with stuttering, showing how her experience transformed from a challenge into a source of strength, confidence, and inspiration for others.
The event concluded with a ceremony honoring the speakers in appreciation of their contributions to raising awareness and supporting the stuttering community.
