Opening Ceremony and Exhibition of Graduation Projects for College of Life Sciences Students

Under the patronage and attendance of the Acting Dean of the College of Life Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Rashid Al-Lafi, the opening ceremony of the graduation projects exhibition for college students was held on the morning of Wednesday, May 7, 2025. Twenty-two graduation projects from various scientific departments participated in the exhibition, including 14 projects from the Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition, five projects from the Department of Communication Disorders, and three projects from the Department of Information Sciences. At the beginning, the master of ceremonies, Saba Al-Fadhli, a student from the College of Education, welcomed the guests, including members of the academic and administrative staff of the College of Life Sciences, as well as the students and their parents. Speaking on behalf of the participating students, she said, "Today, we are showcasing the results of years of work—projects that express our passion and ambitions. We have accomplished them with the guidance and support of our professors, who have been a great support and a source of encouragement. Every project is a story of hard work, determination, and a dream come true." Concluding her speech, she thanked all the supporters and sponsors, hoping that attendees would benefit from and enjoy the projects presented at the exhibition. Then, the Acting Dean of the College of Life Sciences, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ahmed Rashid Al-Lafi delivered his speech on this occasion, saying, "I am pleased and honored to be with you today at this special ceremony, where we celebrate the fruits of years of work, effort, and toil, as well as graduation projects that express your creativity, ambition, and true desire to leave a beautiful mark in your fields of specialization. Today, you are not just concluding a phase; you are beginning a new phase in your academic and professional lives. We at the College of Life Sciences are proud of you, and we are confident that you will be the best ambassadors for the college and Kuwait University." He also extended his deep thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this exhibition, from professors and supervisors to the project judging committee, generous sponsors, and everyone who supported and stood by the students throughout this journey. Concluding his speech, he added, "I say to our students, with Life Sciences, your present is beautiful and your future is even more beautiful, God willing. May God bless you all." During the ceremony, the sponsors were honored by Prof. Al-Lafi expressed his gratitude for their support, including Boubyan Bank, represented by Mr. Mohammed Al-Amir, Youth from STC, and Ghanem Al-Ashiran Company, represented by Mr. Turki Al-Ashiran. The ceremony included an announcement of the results of the best graduation projects. On this occasion, Acting Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Dr. Shareefa Al-Kandari joined Prof. Dr. Al-Lafi honored the graduation projects that received the top three awards, according to the judging panel's vision. First place was shared between two projects from the Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition. One of them was titled "Microplastic Levels in Fish from Local Market." This research addressed one of the most important environmental and health issues of our time, revealing the presence of microplastic particles in fish traded in local markets. It emphasized the need to raise community awareness and monitor the food chain. The project was prepared by students Ghala Al-Gharib, Nour Shashter, Wadha Al-Dosari, Samia Al-Masoud, and Areej Abdul Aziz. The other project, which also won first place, was titled "Evaluating the Association Between Cadmium Exposure and Academic Achievement in Middle School Students in Kuwait." It addressed the relationship between exposure to cadmium and its potential impact on the academic achievement of middle school students in Kuwait. It demonstrated a deep awareness of environmental risks and their effects on children's mental and cognitive performance. It was prepared by students Najla Al-Rashidi, Dana Al-Sulaimani, Manal Al-Rashidi, and Ghufran. Al-Dosari and Moudi Al-Mutairi. These two projects were supervised by Prof. Abdulrahman Ahmed from the Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition, and Ms. Anwar Al-Harbi. Second place was shared between two projects from different departments, one from the Department of Communication Disorders Sciences, entitled: "The Awareness of Educators in Kuwait Concerning Learning Disabilities." The project highlighted the awareness of educational personnel in the State of Kuwait regarding learning disabilities, and discussed the impact of this awareness on the educational environment and the need to enhance understanding and support for this group. The project was supervised by Dr. Tariq Al-Shatti and prepared by students Farah Al-Sheetan, Hessa Al-Kandari, Hala Al-Zaid, Kawthar Abdulkarim, and Fatima Al-Dhafiri. The other second-place winning project was awarded to a project from the Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition, titled "Consumption of Ultra-Processed Foods & Its Effect on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Among Kuwait University Students." This project investigated the relationship between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and their impact on the mental health of Kuwait University students. It addressed aspects of depression, anxiety, and stress from a scientific nutritional perspective, reflecting an awareness of modern health issues. The project was supervised by Prof. Ahmed Abdel Rahman and Ms. Anwar Al-Harbi, and was prepared by students Houri, Fatima Al-Zahraa Dima Al-Houli, Hana Mohammed, and Miqri. Third place was shared between two projects from the Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition. One, titled "Sensory Evaluation of Sourdough Made with Different Types of Flour," examined the sensory evaluation of sourdough bread prepared using different types of flour. It focused on sensory characteristics using a precise scientific and applied approach. The project was prepared by students Deem Al-Mutairi, Wahj Al-Mutairi, Noura Al-Ajmi, Zainab Al-Sayed, and Heba Al-Janai. The other project, titled "Association of Physical Activity with Iron Status and Hematological Profile in Adolescents," examined the relationship between physical activity levels, iron status, and blood parameters in adolescents. It highlighted the importance of an active lifestyle in promoting nutritional health and preventing anemia, using a scientific methodology and careful analysis. The project was prepared by students Hassan Al-Muhamid, Israa Al-Musailikh, Malak Al-Faqih, Najd Al-Mutairi, Duha Al-Mutairi, and Asmaa Al-Lahou. Both projects were supervised by Prof. Abdulrahman Ahmed and Prof. Anwar Al-Harbi.
